Programs [VideoConference]

VConferenceImgThe Little Red River Cree Nation is pleased to have created the first video-conference based college in Canada to best meet the needs of its students and to overcome its geographic challenges.

The LRRCN considers education a priority in the development of the Nation and its communities. Utilizing the videoconference system, KCC is able to provide quality educational programming to adults in an highly accessible manner.

Instructors are responsible for delivering specific courses at their site and over the system. Their colleages, at each of the other communities, support the course locally and provide students with tutorial support. This innovative model significantly reduces staffing costs that would be associated with more traditional delivery methods. As well, students are provided with specialized instruction in each academic area.

The original system consisted of a videoconference unit at each of the three communities and a bridge at Fox Lake. John D'Or and Fox Lake were connected with high speed Centrix data lines. Garden River was included with a high speed radio link.

Since 1998, Kayas Cultural College participated in a project with North Peace Tribal Council, to include many other First Nation communities in the Northern Alberta area in the videoconference distance education delivery model.
